Stories, things to do, and one of a kind tips from downtown Cape Girardeau.
A Day Downtown with Randi and Charlie
A Day Downtown with Randi and Charlie

Downtown Cape is such a vibrant place to be this time of year. There are christmas decorations lining the streets, coffee shops around every corner, and unique finds in every window. I get asked often… Where did you find that? What does that shop have? Where did you and Charlie (my son) go this weekend? And my answer always is… downtown Cape! #DowntownCG

With Christmas season upon us I wanted to answer all of these questions, and share the “hidden gems” you should know about in downtown Cape…

Charlie and I start our usual route at the Indie House which has several stores in it. Mother Earth has beautiful succulents for your plant people, jewelry, clothing, bohemian style things. In the next room is Free Spirit Studio which sells local artisan works and is a mosaic studio that offers classes (I made my own coaster once and i’m so proud of it!) Up the beautiful staircase is my favorite boutique downtown, Brickwood Boutique. If you need a sweater, leggings, cardigan, any winter clothing really, along with some accessories you.have.to.go.to. #shopbrickwood She is constantly getting new items in and has a plus size section too!

Then we may stop at Catapult Creative House to see what the SEMO students have created and are selling. Here you can get a coffee, sit and relax from the cold, and shop oddities like these SEMO shoes or locally made soaps!

On your way down Broadway you can stop and get a bourbon ball or sea-salted caramel at the Corner Grocery Store or a hot tea and snack at Baristas and relax in the lobby of the newly renovated Marquette Building! Say hi to us at Katy O’ Ferrells and remember to support your local restaurants on this shopping spree too!

Down by the river is where the rest of your trip begins…. Bloom is the next stop that features essential oils, tiny co bows and headbands, jewelry, home decor, and the cutest planners for you organized people. Right across the street is Sweet Designs where you can get just about anything monogrammed, or custom design wooden signage like the one below. On the corner of Main and Broadway is Ophelia which is another women’s boutique with a big variety of clothing and the home of piko dresses, which if you don’t have one you need one…softest thing ever, with pockets, you’re welcome. They also have artist-inspired home decor throughout the store so it’s a double win!

Main St in Cape is so nostalgic, really and so exciting to have so many new places to explore! There are antique stores lined up if you’re a DIY gift giver or want a vintage gift from the past. If you find a vintage piece of furniture that could use a coat of paint you can head back up Broadway to Shoppe LaLa who will chalk paint and bring back to life any piece, or sell you the paint and tools to do it yourself! But if you are downtown you must go to Annie Ems. You will feel at home when you step in the door… and want to take all the home decor with you, along with the scents you will be smelling too. Here you can find a classic gift for anyone; be it a pretty pie dish, a classic wreath, an inspiring tea towel, or some Barr and Co soap. There’s also the cutest children’s section in the back you don’t want to miss.

And finally, right next door is Stash. Here is where you will find some of your favorite eclectic pieces, and probably a necklace and hat too. By this time you will definitely need a HUGE cupcake, homemade, and out of this world from Socials. The very last, tiny stop on this exploration is right next door at Atelier. The owner travels to find the most unique gifts to bring to her store such as wooden bow ties and a bartenders swiss army knife. Atelier also features the Bourbon and Boweties stackable bracelets that are a must-have.

Although Charlie and I prefer to bundle up and walk, you can choose to drive, or even take advantage of the new trolley that runs through downtown! If you can’t make it on Small Business Saturday November 25th, or the Downtown Christmas Open House Dec 1 – 2, (your missing out on Christmas cheer Grinch) we still welcome you to come down anytime at all and explore what we have to offer!

Remember when you are shopping downtown to give a shout out on social media and use hashtags to support these small businesses and all they provide to this community!
