About

Main Street

Main Street America is a movement that grew out of the recognition that a community is only as strong as its core. In an era when many people had given up hope about the commercial and cultural viability of downtown, and when suburbs, shopping malls, and big box retailers were dominating the American landscape, this seemed like an unlikely proposition. But, over the last four decades, the Main Street movement has proven that downtowns are the heart of our communities.

About

The CID

The Downtown Cape Girardeau Community Improvement District was established through a petition process endorsed by city council in May of 2014 with revenue from the approved ½ cent sales tax beginning January 2015. It has a 7 member board to oversee its direction.

About

Downtown Strategic Plan

The Downtown Cape Girardeau Strategic Plan is utilized by key stakeholders to provide a framework for the continued revitalization of our downtown community. The plan was adopted in 2019 by the downtown development team which includes the City of Cape Girardeau, Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Cape Girardeau Community Improvement District, and Old Town Cape.

About

Downtown Walking Tours

Downtown walking tours are a continuing partnership with the Southeast Missouri State University's Historic Preservation Program. These self-guided virtual tours provide opportunities to explore the history of key buildings within the downtown district.
