Meet Our Board: Emilie Buelow

Old Town Cape, Inc. currently has a 15-member Board of Directors, and we believe it’s time you meet them! Get to know Emilie Buelow below.

Tell us a bit about yourself (job, family, hobbies, etc.)

I’m not originally from Cape Girardeau, but I’ve been calling Cape home now for the past thirteen years. I attended college at Southeast Missouri State where I received a degree in Dietetics. Right before graduating from college, I took over a home decor and gift boutique called Annie-Em’s at Home, and I’ve been operating it for the past eight years. Last year, I got married to my husband Andrew, and we recently just moved into a new home that we have been renovating over the past year. I am a huge animal lover! We have two rescue Great Pyrenees mixes named Georgia and Genevieve. When I’m not spending time with my husband or working in my store, I enjoy cooking, traveling, hiking, and walking our dogs.

What is your current role on the OTC Board and how long you have served?

I have been serving on the Board of Directors for six years, and I currently serve as Past President.

Why did you choose to join the OTC Board?

I chose Old Town Cape because I wanted to be a part of the momentum that is and has been taking place downtown. My mother opened my store in 2001, and it’s been amazing to see the changes and progress that has been made over the past nineteen years. I’m so excited to be a part of that change, and I look forward to the changes we will continue to see over the next nineteen years.

What special perspective/qualities do you believe you bring to the Board?

I’ve always felt that I am a foot solider for downtown. I’m downtown almost every single day, and because I own a retail store, I’m always getting to interact with locals and visitors and hear their compliments and views of downtown. I always enjoy hearing their perspectives and their visions of what they want to see our downtown become.

What do you love most about Downtown Cape?

I love that there’s always something to do. No matter what time of day, you can always find an event or activity taking place. Whether it’s an event in one of the retail stores, taking a cooking class, seeing a new art exhibit, shopping, dining, listening to live music or simply walking your dog along the river front, there’s always something to do or see while you’re there.

Where is your favorite place to go when you’re downtown?

I can’t say that I have one specific place that is my very favorite. I do, however, enjoy eating at all of the local restaurants that we have downtown. I consider myself to be a foodie, and it’s been nice to see all of the new restaurants that have opened up in the last few years. It’s exciting to have so many great options!

What’s your favorite Old Town Cape event?

My favorite Old Town Cape event would have be Tunes at Twilight. I love seeing people of all different ages and backgrounds coming together for an outdoor concert. We always love to pack a picnic and bring our dogs. It’s the highlight of our week!
