If you didn’t already know, May is Historic Preservation Month! Downtown Cape is the centerpiece of our beautiful city’s history, and we couldn’t be more proud to work each day to revitalize and preserve all there is to love about Cape. The intentional preservation of our community’s history is incredibly important to us, and we’ve been lucky to have so many great men, women, and organizations come alongside us to work towards that goal!
This month we’re celebrating that #ThisPlaceMatters in multiple ways. We hosted a new event called Talking Tombstones located in the Old Lorimier Cemetery that featured monologues about past Cape Girardeau residents by the University’s Historic Preservation students. We’ve also been sharing the multiple preservation awards we’ve given out over the last 20 years and their winners to show our appreciation to those who have partnered with us in revitalizing downtown. On May 24, we’ll be participating in a Historic Preservation Walk along Broadway!
But now it’s your turn to celebrate! To help you join in the fun, we’ve created a scavenger hunt around our district that highlights some of the beautiful architectural features many of our downtown buildings and homes display. To get started, download the Downtown Architecture Scavenger Hunt below! Participants who complete the hunt will be entered to win a new “Find Me in Downtown Cape” t-shirt and koozie!
While you’re out and about, be sure to snap some photos of your favorite historic downtown buildings and hashtag #ThisPlaceMatters to join the millions of people celebrating Historic Preservation Month!
Be sure to get started soon – completed scavenger hunts are due at the end of May.
